Alison Roman returns: on cooking for others, creating viral recipes, and DIY martini bars

“Making cookbooks is like my reason for living—and I take it extremely, extremely personally and extremely seriously.”

She’s back! ALISON ROMAN — this week’s guest — returns for an all-new conversation on today’s show.

Of course, you know Alison Roman. She’s, as the New Yorker’s Michele Moses writes, ‘no ordinary food writer… she’s more like a phenomenon.’ And of course, she’s the author of Dining In, her first cookbook that became an overnight hit among home cooks, a writes a column for the New York Times Food section and contributes to Bon Appetit magazine.

Now she’s back with her latest book, which debuted on the New York Times bestseller list. It’s called Nothing Fancy: Unfussy Food For Having People Over—and odds are you’re already seeing the recipes on your social media feeds.

Building on our conversation from last year, in today’s show we talk with Alison about how she approaches cooking for others — about writing recipes that go viral — and of course, about anchovies, DIY martini bars, and cookbooks. And we play a having-someone-over game with Alison.

Also in today’s show:

  • New York Times contributor and Salt + Spine guest Priya Krishna joins us to talk about the economics of cookbook deals.

  • Salt + Spine Kitchen Correspondent Sarah Varney heads into the kitchen to cook from Nothing Fancy.

  • Great Jones’ Sierra Tishgart shares a vintage work from their cookbook collection.
