Rose Levy Beranbaum & Woody Wolston Rose's Baking Basics
Today, on the second episode of our Baking Week, we're excited to welcome Rose Levy Beranbaum and her collaborator, Woody Wolston, to SALT + SPINE, the podcast on stories behind cookbooks.
Rose has written a dozen baking books, including the iconic The Cake Bible, first published and 1988 and now in its 55th printing.
Rose went on to produce other iconic works, like The Bread Bible, The Baking Bible, and Rose’s Heavenly Cakes, and now she’s back with her latest, Rose’s Baking Basics.
This latest book is true to Rose’s meticulous attention to detail, and bolstered by step-by-step photos for every recipe, excellent for in Rose’s words “the occasional baker or the ardent enthusiast.” And it’s full of expert tips and science tricks to help you master these recipes.
On this episode of Salt + Spine’s special Baking Week, we sat down with Rose and Woody at the San Francisco’s The Civic Kitchen to talk about some tricks behind great baking, Rose’s collection of best-selling and iconic baking books, and their cookbook influences.

If you love cookies, you won’t want to miss the 2018 Cookie Swap extravaganza hosted by Salt + Spine and The Civic Kitchen! We’ll open up the kitchen for an afternoon of cookie demos, baking tips, sampling, and glasses of bubbly and warm apple cider.
Bring one dozen (or more!) homemade cookies, and swap them for other cookies to take home. No time to bake? You can still take cookies home - $10 per dozen.
Proceeds from the event will benefit La Cocina, which supports low-income food entrepreneurs in the Bay Area.
We’ll serve cookies by authors featured on Salt + Spine and treats from other home bakers. We'll be joined by cookbook authors and Salt + Spine guests Jessica Battilana and Cal Peternell, who will demo some of their favorite cookies—plus, pick up some cookie-baking tricks from demos by Salt + Spine host Brian Hogan Stewart and Civic Kitchen teachers just in time for the holidays.
We will also give away a set of baking books and a Salt + Spine t-shirt to celebrate Baking Week!

Triple Lemon Velvet Bundt Cake
The combination of butter, lemon, and vanilla is one of the most glorious ones in cake realm. This soft, velvety, tender, and lofty cake is contrasted by a crunchy crust and crisp, classic lemon sugar glaze. This is my favorite of all lemon cakes. Baked in two smaller pans, it makes terrific holiday gifts.
